RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16 star Dawn has recently revealed the heartfelt reason behind her decision to lipsync against her “best friend” Amanda Tori Meating during the Lip Sync LaLaPaRuza Smackdown. In a surprising turn of events, Dawn chose to face off against Amanda, knowing that she would select the lipsync song they both wanted to perform, “Damaged” by Danity Kane.
The episode featured 11 eliminated queens returning to compete in a lipsync slay off for the title of “Queen of She Done Already Done Had Herses.” The queens were randomly selected to choose their opponents and the lipsync songs from a selection of queer favorite bops.
Despite Dawn’s thoughtful strategy, Amanda outperformed her in the lipsync, ultimately knocking Dawn out of the competition. Following the episode, Dawn took to X/Twitter to explain the deeper meaning behind her decision to lipsync against her best friend.
In her post, Dawn confirmed that while part of her decision was based on knowing she wouldn’t win and feeling stressed about embarrassing herself, there was a more significant reason behind it. She wanted to have fun on stage with someone who meant a lot to her, while also ensuring that Amanda would continue in the competition.
Dawn revealed that she was feeling anxious and unprepared due to difficult circumstances in her life away from Drag Race. Despite Amanda making it to round two of the competition, she was ultimately eliminated after being defeated by Megami to Cher’s song, “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss).”
In the end, BBL queen Morphine Dion Love emerged as the winner of the LaLaPaRuza Smackdown, taking home $50,000 in the process. The top three contestants heading into the season finale are Plane Jane, Sapphira Cristál, and Nymphia Wind.
As for a potential season 16 reunion, there are currently no plans in place. Unlike previous seasons, the finale was reportedly filmed shortly after the rest of the show, making a reunion unnecessary. The Lip Sync LaLaPaRuza Smackdown served as a replacement for the reunion episode, with the grand finale set to air on MTV in the US and WOW Presents Plus internationally this Friday, 19 April.
Overall, Dawn’s decision to lipsync against her best friend Amanda showcased a mix of strategic thinking and genuine friendship, adding an emotional layer to the competition. Fans will have to tune in to see who will be crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16.
