It was a typical April Fool’s Day prank that took the internet by storm, leaving scores of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fans in a state of shock and excitement. The viral post that circulated on social media hinted at a major revamp for the beloved drag reality show, sparking a flurry of reactions and discussions among the show’s dedicated fanbase.
The post, which appeared on the popular “RuPaul’s Drag Race Family” Facebook fan page in the early hours of April 1st, suggested that the upcoming season 17 of the show would feature a groundbreaking new format. According to the post, the new season would be completely live, with contestants filming each task weekly and the runways and final lip-syncs airing live on Friday nights.
“Rather than filming for six weeks and having a whole year to wait and see the results, the cast will film each task weekly with the runways and final lip-syncs being completely live on a Friday night,” the post read. “After 16 seasons producers decided this shake up is just the thing the format needs.”
In addition to the promise of a live format, the post also claimed that two-time “Drag Race” winner and “Doctor Who” star Jinkx Monsoon would be taking over from Ross Matthews as a permanent judge on the show. The tantalizing details shared in the post quickly caught the attention of fans, with over 12,000 reactions, 2,000 comments, and almost 2,000 shares within hours of its publication.
While many fans expressed their excitement at the prospect of a live format and Jinkx Monsoon joining the judging panel, others remained skeptical. Some astute followers of the fan page pointed out the date of the post and questioned its authenticity, with one person commenting, “Damn I was suspicious and I’m pretty sure I was right to be so considering the date.”
Despite being a clear April Fool’s Day prank, the fake news managed to gain traction online, fueled by recent changes in the “Drag Race” franchise. Just last month, it was announced that Michelle Visage would take over as head judge on the spin-off franchise “Drag Race Down Under.” Additionally, Jinkx Monsoon’s rising star power both on TV and on stage made the idea of her becoming a permanent fixture on “Drag Race” not entirely far-fetched.
As the dust settled and fans came to terms with the fact that they had fallen for an elaborate prank, it served as a reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread online. Despite the initial shock and excitement generated by the fake news, it was all in good fun, adding an extra layer of humor to an already joyous day of pranks and laughter.
The viral April Fool’s Day post may have tricked many “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fans, but it also brought them together in a shared moment of amusement and camaraderie. As they eagerly await the real season 17 of their favorite show, they can look back on this playful prank and smile at how easily they were fooled, if only for a fleeting moment.
