Luca Guadagnino, known for his captivating LGBTQ+ cinematic works, is gearing up to release his latest film, “Queer,” with Daniel Craig in the lead role. The Italian director has a history of delving into queer themes and intense romantic relationships in his films, from “Call Me By Your Name” to “Challengers.” “Queer” is set to premiere later this year, possibly at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
The plot of “Queer” is based on William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, which follows the story of Lee, played by Daniel Craig, as he navigates life in Mexico City. Lee seeks out fulfilling sexual encounters in the American expatriate scene and becomes infatuated with Allerton, a young discharged American Navy serviceman. The film explores themes of desire and obsession in a non-chronological narrative.
In addition to Daniel Craig, the cast of “Queer” includes Drew Starkey, Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, and Henry Saga. The film’s adaptation was written by American playwright Justin Kuritzkes, who previously worked with Guadagnino on “Challengers.” British designer Jonathan Anderson, known for his work in fashion with Loewe and JW Anderson, is in charge of the film’s costumes.
“Queer” is not the first attempt at adapting Burroughs’ novel for the screen. In 2011, a project starring Stanley Tucci and Ben Foster fell through. Guadagnino’s take on the story promises to be a unique and transformative experience, as hinted by Anderson’s post on Instagram featuring Drew Starkey with a centipede necklace symbolizing queer transformation.
Guadagnino’s previous film, “Challengers,” a tennis drama exploring a tense love triangle between Tashi (Zendaya), Art (Mike Faist), and Patrick (Josh O’Connor), was released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2024. The film delves into themes of bisexuality and desire in a narrative filled with tension and passion.
With “Challengers” joining Guadagnino’s unofficial trilogy of desire alongside “I Am Love,” “A Bigger Splash,” and “Call Me By Your Name,” “Queer” may become the next installment in his collection of films focused on intense romantic relationships and nuanced desires.
As fans eagerly await the release of “Queer,” it promises to be another captivating and thought-provoking addition to Luca Guadagnino’s filmography.
