Country singer Cassadee Pope has made a heartwarming offer to LGBTQ+ couples in Tennessee after the state’s new marriage law raised concerns for queer couples. The law, known as HB 878, allows officials to refuse to solemnize a marriage at their discretion, sparking outrage among many in the LGBTQ+ community.
Pope, who rose to fame as the winner of The Voice USA in season three, took to Instagram on March 5th to express her thoughts on the controversial law. In a video posted on her account, she condemned the new legislation, calling it an attack on same-sex couples. However, she also shared a positive message with her followers – revealing that she became ordained in 2020 and is now officially able to marry couples.
In the video, Pope proudly displayed her Certificate of Ministry and offered her services to LGBTQ+ couples who may face challenges under the new law. She stated, “It’s official! So, if you run into any issues, I’d love to help you out.” The caption accompanying the video read, “I now pronounce you whatever the hell you want.”
This isn’t the first time Pope has shown her support for the LGBTQ+ community. In 2019, during Pride Month, she posted a message of solidarity with her queer brothers and sisters. Despite facing backlash for being an ally to the community, Pope continued to stand by her beliefs. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed that her progressive views were not well-received by some country music fans, prompting her to transition back to her pop-punk roots.
Pope’s return to her rock roots has been well-received by fans, with her 2023 single ‘People That I Love Leave’ marking a successful comeback. She expressed her appreciation for the rock genre, noting that she feels more at home expressing herself in that space. Unlike in country music, where she felt shamed for speaking out, Pope found acceptance and support in the rock community.
In a similar vein, Taylor Swift has also undergone a musical evolution throughout her career. Starting out as a country singer, Swift transitioned into pop music with her album ‘Red’ in 2012. Over the years, she has explored different genres, including indie folk with albums like ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’. Swift’s versatility as an artist has been showcased in her record-breaking show, ‘The Eras Tour’, where she has incorporated elements from all her musical eras.
With her offer to marry LGBTQ+ couples in Tennessee, Cassadee Pope is not only standing up for equality but also spreading love and acceptance in a time of uncertainty. As an ordained minister, she is using her platform to make a positive impact and support those who may face discrimination under the new marriage law. Her actions serve as a reminder of the power of music and art to inspire change and promote inclusivity in all communities.
