Republican congresswoman Lauren Boebert, known for her controversial anti-LGBTQ+ remarks, recently underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot after being diagnosed with a rare vascular disorder. Boebert was rushed to a Colorado hospital after experiencing severe swelling in her left leg on Monday (1 April). Her campaign team revealed that doctors found an acute blood clot and inserted a stent to keep an artery open. Subsequently, she was diagnosed with May-Thurner Syndrome.
May-Thurner syndrome is a condition where the left iliac vein, responsible for carrying blood from the left leg to the heart, is compressed by the right iliac artery in the pelvis. This compression can obstruct blood flow to the heart, leading to symptoms such as swelling, feelings of fullness or heaviness in the legs or feet, varicose veins, and venous ulcers or sores on the leg that do not heal. Some individuals with this syndrome may experience deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can result in life-threatening pulmonary embolisms if blood clots break loose and travel to the lungs.
The Cleveland Clinic noted that May-Thurner syndrome is more prevalent in women, people assigned female at birth, and adults aged 20 to 50. While the cause of Boebert’s diagnosis remains unknown, her campaign suggested that factors like dehydration, travel, and extended periods of sitting could have played a role in her condition. Despite the health scare, there are no significant concerns for her long-term well-being or her ability to fulfill her duties as a congresswoman. However, it is uncertain when she will return to Washington DC.
Boebert represents Colorado’s third congressional district but is currently vying for a seat in the state’s fourth district, which is considered more Republican-friendly. Her absence from Congress due to health reasons could impact her political ambitions and activities in Washington DC.
It is crucial for individuals with May-Thurner syndrome to receive prompt medical attention and follow treatment plans to prevent complications like blood clots and pulmonary embolisms. By raising awareness about this rare vascular disorder, people can better understand the symptoms and risk factors associated with it.
In conclusion, Boebert’s recent health scare highlights the importance of early detection and treatment of vascular disorders like May-Thurner syndrome. As she focuses on her recovery and eventual return to Congress, it serves as a reminder of the fragility of human health and the need for proactive healthcare measures.
