Oscar nominee Colman Domingo is the man of the moment, as he has recently landed not one, but two major film projects. And to top it off, both films are biopics of music legends. The 54-year-old actor made history with his role as queer civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the Netflix biopic Rustin, becoming only the second gay actor ever to be nominated for Best Actor for playing a gay character. Domingo will now be fighting to make LGBTQ+ history at the Oscars, going up against some formidable competition.
But while his focus is currently on winning the prestigious award, he is also set to tackle two more significant roles in the world of biopics. Domingo has been cast in Antoine Fuqua’s highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, simply titled Michael. In this film, he will portray Joe Jackson, the father of the King of Pop himself. The role is sure to be a challenging one, as it explores the complicated soul of Michael Jackson and his impact on music and culture as a global icon. Domingo expressed his excitement about being part of a project that delves into such a legendary figure’s life and also praised his co-star Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, for his incredible transformation into the iconic musician.
But that’s not all. Domingo will also be taking on the role of another influential father figure in the world of music: Nat King Cole. He revealed to Variety that he has been working on a script for a Nat King Cole musical film for several years. Alongside portraying King Cole, Domingo will also make his directorial debut with this project. It’s a fitting challenge for him, considering his involvement in co-writing the 2019 play Lights Out: Nat ‘King’ Cole. With his deep understanding of King Cole’s life and legacy, Domingo is sure to deliver a captivating performance.
This year is shaping up to be a monumental one for Domingo, as he juggles his roles in these two biopics with several other exciting projects. He will be starring in Pedro Pascal’s lesbian road trip romp Drive Away Dolls, the Oscar-nominated musical The Color Purple, and drama film Sing Sing. Additionally, he is producing Netflix’s new horror flick, It’s What’s Inside. With such a diverse range of roles and responsibilities, Domingo is showcasing his versatility and talent as both an actor and a producer.
It’s clear that Domingo is on a career high right now, and rightfully so. His recent accomplishments and upcoming projects demonstrate his commitment to telling important stories and portraying influential figures in music and LGBTQ+ history. As he continues to break barriers and make LGBTQ+ representation more visible in the film industry, Domingo’s impact as an actor and advocate cannot be underestimated.
As the Oscars approach, all eyes will be on Domingo, as he vies for the Best Actor award. Whether he takes home the prize or not, there is no doubt that his talent and dedication to his craft have solidified his place among the industry’s finest. And with his roles in the Michael Jackson and Nat King Cole biopics, he is set to leave an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
