Bradley Riches, the breakout star of the hit series “Heartstopper,” has recently opened up about his experience on “Celebrity Big Brother” and the challenges of living with autism. The 22-year-old actor, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of nine, has been a vocal advocate for representation in the entertainment industry.
Riches, who joined the cast of “Heartstopper” for its second season and is set to appear in the upcoming series of BBC comedy horror “Wreck,” entered the “Celebrity Big Brother” house last week. During a conversation with fellow housemate Marisha Wallace, Riches shared his journey of self-discovery and the importance of embracing his true self.
“I wrote a book, a children’s book,” Riches explained to Wallace. “It’s basically about a boy who’s growing up, and then he gets diagnosed with being autistic… it’s me.” The actor went on to discuss the challenges of being in the spotlight and how it can sometimes be overwhelming. Despite his coping mechanisms and the support of his fellow housemates, Riches admitted that he often struggles with overthinking and feeling like he’s not doing everything right.
“That’s the main reason I wanted to come here, was to push myself,” Riches revealed. Wallace, in a touching moment, comforted him by reassuring him that he’s doing everything right and that being himself is beautiful. Riches expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to challenge himself and grow as an individual.
In a previous interview with Metro, Riches emphasized the importance of authentic representation in media. “I never saw an actor who was openly autistic, but we’re getting towards the right place with more autistic actors playing autistic roles, which should always be the case, otherwise it’s not truthful representation,” he stated. The actor highlighted the need for more neurodivergent actors on television to share their unique stories and experiences.
Riches’ openness about his journey with autism has resonated with fans and viewers alike, who have praised him for his bravery and honesty. His willingness to share his story and advocate for greater representation has sparked important conversations about diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry.
As Riches continues to navigate his career and raise awareness about autism, he serves as a role model for young people facing similar challenges. His presence in the spotlight is a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing one’s true self and advocating for greater diversity in media.
In a world where authenticity is often overshadowed by societal expectations, Bradley Riches stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. His courage to speak out about his experiences with autism is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and the impact that representation can have on individuals from all walks of life.
