The Cannes Film Festival was abuzz with excitement as whispers and rumors circulated about director Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film, “Queer.” The Italian director, known for his deeply passionate queer narratives, seems to have outdone himself with this latest project.
Although “Queer” did not premiere at Cannes, the film was the hot topic of conversation among attendees. Following the success of Guadagnino’s previous film, “Challengers,” which delved into a complex love triangle between tennis players, the anticipation for “Queer” was palpable.
One producer who had the opportunity to see an early screening of “Queer” at Cannes described the film as “fantastic.” They also praised Daniel Craig’s performance, suggesting that it may be the actor’s best work to date. With a runtime of three hours, “Queer” promises to be an epic and immersive experience for audiences.
Based on William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel, “Queer” follows the story of Lee, played by Daniel Craig, as he navigates the American expatriate scene in Mexico City. Lee becomes infatuated with Allerton, portrayed by Drew Starkey, a young discharged American Navy serviceman. The film also features a talented ensemble cast, including Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, and Henry Saga in supporting roles.
The adaptation of “Queer” was penned by American playwright Justin Kuritzkes, who previously worked on “Challengers” with Guadagnino. Speaking about the project, Kuritzkes shared how honored he was to be asked to adapt the novel and collaborate with Guadagnino once again.
In addition to the stellar cast and creative team behind “Queer,” British designer Jonathan Anderson has crafted the film’s costumes. Known for his work with Loewe and JW Anderson, Anderson brings a unique vision to the film’s visual aesthetic.
Filmed in locations ranging from Rome, Italy to Quito, Ecuador, “Queer” recently completed post-production and is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The festival, scheduled for late August to early September, will showcase the much-anticipated film to audiences and critics alike.
After the success of “Challengers,” fans and industry insiders are eagerly awaiting Guadagnino’s latest offering. With its provocative storyline, talented cast, and immersive runtime, “Queer” promises to be a standout film in the director’s impressive body of work. As the countdown to the Venice Film Festival begins, all eyes are on Luca Guadagnino and his cinematic masterpiece, “Queer.”
