Pop star Britney Spears has issued an apology to her ex-boyfriend and fellow musician, Justin Timberlake, for the content of her memoir, The Woman In Me. The book, released in 2023, delves into Spears’ rise to fame, her relationships, and the 13-year conservatorship she was placed under. In the memoir, she shared a candid account of her relationship with Timberlake, including allegations that he urged her to have an abortion and portrayed her as a heartbreaker in the aftermath of their breakup. However, in a recent Instagram post, Spears expressed regret for any offense caused and praised Timberlake’s latest songs.
In the Instagram post shared on January 29th, Spears uploaded a clip of Timberlake performing a medley of his hits with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Notably absent from the performance was Timberlake’s song “Cry Me A River,” which was inspired by his breakup with Spears. In the caption of her post, Spears apologized for some of the content in her memoir and expressed her love for Timberlake’s new song “Selfish.” She also mentioned how she always laughed when she saw Timberlake and Fallon together.
Following the release of Timberlake’s song “Selfish” on January 26th, fans of Spears responded by streaming her song of the same name from her 2011 album Femme Fatale. Initially, Britney’s “Selfish” topped the US iTunes chart, with Timberlake’s song lagging behind. However, at the time of writing, Timberlake’s song has climbed to number four while Britney’s is at number six. In the UK iTunes chart, Britney’s song sits at number 12, whereas Timberlake’s is at number seven.
In her memoir, Spears opened up about how Timberlake’s song “Cry Me A River” and its music video, which featured a Britney Spears-lookalike, vilified her in the aftermath of their breakup. She felt that there was no way for her to tell her side of the story at the time, as Justin had convinced the world of his version. She expressed her belief that Timberlake didn’t fully understand the power he had in shaming her.
The memoir also revealed that Spears became pregnant with Timberlake’s baby during their relationship, which lasted from 1999 to 2002. However, she decided to have an abortion as Timberlake expressed that he wasn’t ready to become a father. Spears described the abortion as one of the most agonizing experiences she had ever been through, stating that if it were up to her alone, she wouldn’t have done it.
After sharing her apology video to Timberlake, as well as pictures of herself in a sheer bodysuit, Spears has made her Instagram profile private, allowing only her most loyal fans to view her posts.
Throughout her memoir, Spears expressed gratitude towards the LGBTQ+ community for their support over the years. She acknowledged that her gay friends were always protective of her and took on a supportive role due to her innocence and kindness. Spears has long been an LGBTQ+ ally and previously accepted the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Awards. In her acceptance speech, she emphasized the importance of accepting individuals unconditionally and expressing oneself through art.
As Britney Spears continues to navigate her journey in the spotlight and reflect on her past experiences, her fans eagerly await any developments in her personal and professional life. With her recent apology to Justin Timberlake, it appears that Spears is taking steps towards reconciliation and growth.
