Almost three years after clinching a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Welsh professional boxer Lauren Price is gearing up to take on undisputed world champion Jessica McCaskill for the WBA, IBO, and Ring Magazine welterweight titles. The highly anticipated bout is set to take place at the Utilita Arena in Cardiff on 11 May, marking a significant milestone in Price’s career as she fulfills her dream of fighting on home soil.
Price, who hails from Wales and is known for her impressive boxing skills, expressed her excitement about the upcoming fight, stating that it has been her “main dream” to compete in front of her own crowd for the past 10 years. She emphasized the significance of having her “Welsh army” behind her, highlighting the support she will receive from her loyal fans during the match.
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Price admitted that she is not taking the easy route by facing McCaskill, a legitimate champion who currently holds the WBA and WBC welterweight titles. Despite recognizing McCaskill as a formidable opponent, Price remains focused on her goal of securing victory and claiming the coveted world titles.
In a show of respect towards her opponent, Price commended McCaskill for her contributions to women’s boxing and acknowledged her as a great competitor. However, she made it clear that once the bell rings on 11 May, all niceties will be set aside as they battle it out for the championship belts.
The upcoming fight between Price and McCaskill is expected to be a monumental event in the world of boxing, offering Price the opportunity to become the first female world champion from Wales. McCaskill, who hails from Chicago, is determined to spoil Price’s homecoming by aiming to secure victory and bring the titles back to America.
Price’s journey as a professional boxer has been marked by her openness about her identity as a lesbian and her commitment to promoting acceptance and diversity within the sports community. She has been vocal about her experiences coming out and has emphasized the importance of inclusivity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their sexuality or background.
Reflecting on her success at the Tokyo Olympics, where she made history as the first Welsh boxer to win an Olympic gold medal, Price highlighted the support for inclusion and diversity within the sporting world. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious event and credited her determination and hard work for achieving her lifelong dream.
Following the upcoming title fight in May, Price plans to celebrate with her grandmother and partner, fellow boxer Karriss Artingstall, whom she has been with for over four years. Price and Artingstall, who are also sparring partners, have previously shared their experiences of training together and fighting on the same card, showcasing their dedication to their sport and each other.
As Price gears up to face McCaskill in their highly anticipated showdown in Cardiff, boxing fans and sports enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this historic battle. With both fighters poised to give it their all in the ring, the stage is set for an electrifying match that will determine the next undisputed welterweight champion.
