Alice Oseman Provides Update on Final Heartstopper Volume
Fans of the popular Netflix series and graphic novel, Heartstopper, might finally have an end in sight for the story of Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, as revealed by series author Alice Oseman.
While fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Heartstopper season three on Netflix, they have also been anxiously waiting for updates regarding the sixth volume of the queer graphic novel series which forms the base for the popular show.
Oseman had previously announced that volume six would be the last in the series, an instalment that would reveal the fate of the young lovers and main characters of the series, Nick and Charlie. In the Netflix adaptation, these characters are portrayed by actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke respectively. The author admitted earlier this year that she was struggling with ideas for this final instalment of the series. However, it appears that she’s finally broken through her writers’ block.
In a recent post via Instagram stories shared on Saturday (25 May), Oseman gave fans a sneak peek at her progress through a picture of a document on her computer screen, displaying a simple yet tantalizing tease – the words “The End.”
“I think I have a first draft of vol 6. (Just the writing, haven’t started the drawing yet),” she wrote on her Instagram story, implying that the storytelling aspect of the volume was nearing completion. She continued, “I think it’s probably too long [right now] but maybe I can make it work… but mostly feeling pretty good about it. Gonna share with some friends and colleagues and get some opinions, then make some tweaks probably.” This tired, yet hopeful message serves as a note of promise for the series’ multitude of fans.
Oseman also indicated that she’s planning to kick-start the drawing phase for the graphic novel in the coming month. The author seemed ecstatic to have completed mapping the story and is eager to move onto illustrating it, though she warned fans that this stage might take her at least 18 months to achieve. Therefore, it appears that fans may have to exhibit patience until the end of 2025, or possibly even longer, before they can get their hands on the final comic.
In the fifth volume of the series, which was released last December, readers witnessed as Nick and Charlie took their relationship to the next level. The volume also shared insights on Charlie’s journey towards recovering from an eating disorder and highlighted the ensuing chaos amongst the Heartstopper’s group of friends as they scramble for university placements.
According to actor Joe Locke, the upcoming season three of the Netflix adaptation will be “darker” and “raunchier” compared to its predecessors. Therefore, it is highly plausible that the plot for the third season will include the stories and events from volume five.
In conclusion, Heartstopper season three is confirmed to be released on 3rd October. While Alice Oseman’s major update ramps up anticipation for the final volume of the comic series, fans have an exciting third season to look forward to in the meantime.
