Nava Mau, the star of popular mini-series “Baby Reindeer,” was recently awarded the PFLAG National George Takei Advocate award due to her tireless advocacy and commitment towards ensuring visibility, representation, and authenticity.
Mau, who plays Teri in the hit Netflix series, was bestowed the honour on May 30th. The impactful show has propelled Mau into the spotlight, highlighting her impressive acting talents and urgently important advocacy work.
The coveted award is named after George Takei, a stalwart advocate of LGBTQ+ rights best known for his role in the beloved series “Star Trek,” as well as his success as a New York Times best-selling author. The award is intended to honour individuals who effectively leverage their platforms to augment the important work of PFLAG. In the previous year, Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley was the recipient of this esteemed award.
PFLAG, an acronym for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, stands as a robust advocacy group committed to supporting, educating and advocating for LGBTQ+ communities and their allies. Their efforts have made significant strides towards fostering acceptance and understanding.
Mau has expressed that receiving this award has been profoundly meaningful for her, a sentiment stemming largely from her personal use of the human rights-oriented services PFLAG offers. In a statement, she emphasized her continued commitment to utilize her voice and filmmaking prowess towards the pursuit of justice, equity, and inclusion.
“It’s truly an honour to accept this award,” Mau added.
Brian Bond, the chief executive of PFLAG National, commended Mau on her tireless advocacy and dedication. Bond stated, “Nava’s dedication and tireless advocacy is exemplary of what happens when love takes action, and she has touched countless lives within the LGBTQ+ community.”
Bond further noted that Mau’s resolve to ensure visibility, representation, and authenticity is aligned with PFLAG’s core mission. He remarked that their celebration of Mau’s numerous contributions serves not only as recognition for her remarkable work but also as a testament to the power of love, resilience, and communal strength in driving meaningful change.
In particular, he emphasised that Mau serves as an inspiring role model for numerous families and trans youth associated with PFLAG.
Since starring in “Baby Reindeer,” which draws inspiration from actual events, Mau has opened up about the experience of portraying a real-life trans individual. In a discussion with Digital Spy, she confided, “I felt a great sense of responsibility and cared a lot about telling the story in the best way possible.”
