Comedian and TV presenter Tom Allen is set to host a new film titled “Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen,” which aims to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the UK’s first same-sex marriage. The film will air on BBC One on Wednesday night at 9pm.
In “Big Gay Wedding,” Allen follows the journey of a Brighton-based couple, Adam and Dan, as he helps them plan their dream wedding with the assistance of his celebrity friends, including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Oti Mabuse, and John Whaite. Alongside arranging the wedding, Allen delves into the history of marriage equality in the UK, speaking with activists and politicians who fought for the rights of gay couples to marry.
Speaking about the film, Allen emphasized the importance of recognizing and appreciating the rights that have been won by the LGBTQ+ community. He highlighted the need for unity and cooperation in fighting for equality, especially in the face of ongoing challenges and discrimination.
Allen also shared his personal experiences of growing up gay during challenging times, including the AIDS crisis and the implementation of Section 28, which restricted discussions about homosexuality in schools. He underscored the impact of such legislation on LGBTQ+ individuals and the importance of continuing to advocate for equal rights.
While “Big Gay Wedding” is a celebration of love and progress, Allen acknowledged that there is still work to be done in achieving full equality for queer individuals. He expressed hope that the film would inspire activists and serve as a reminder of the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
The film not only showcases the joy and creativity of Adam and Dan’s wedding but also highlights the resilience and authenticity of queer individuals in expressing themselves fully. Allen praised the couple’s exuberance and emphasized the importance of embracing one’s true self without fear or shame.
“Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen” is set to premiere on BBC One on March 27 at 9pm GMT, with availability on BBC iPlayer following the broadcast. The film serves as a poignant reminder of the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights while also recognizing the challenges that remain in achieving full equality.
