The 2024 Oscars were a night filled with queer moments that stole the show, even though many LGBTQ+ stars and stories nominated for awards did not take home the trophies they deserved. Despite the losses for stars like Lily Gladstone and Colman Domingo, there were still plenty of groundbreaking moments that celebrated queer representation across the night.
One of the standout moments of the evening was when Billie Eilish made history by winning the Best Original Song award for “What Was I Made For?” This victory made her the youngest artist ever to win two Academy Awards. Eilish, who has previously expressed her physical attraction to women, also shared a candid moment on the red carpet where she expressed feeling intimidated by their beauty and presence.
Another highlight of the night was Ryan Gosling’s performance of the sentimental Barbie power ballad, “I’m Just Ken”, during which he shared a kiss with his co-star Scott Evans. The sweet moment captured the audience’s hearts and showed a beautiful display of affection between two men.
Reneé Rapp and Towa Bird also made headlines by making their official public debut on the Oscars red carpet. Rapp, who recently reaffirmed her identity as a lesbian, looked stunning alongside Bird as they walked the red carpet together.
Taylor Zakhar Perez also made waves by discussing his on-screen kiss with Nicholas Galitzine, revealing that Galitzine is a good kisser and that they had to practice a lot for the scene. Perez’s openness about his experience added to the diversity and representation celebrated at the Oscars.
Trans model and TikTok star Alex Consani served looks on the red carpet, giving a masterclass on posing for photos. His advice to “statueette” while posing showcased his confidence and style at the event.
Jonathan Bailey, known for his role in “Bridgerton,” continued to prove why he is Hollywood leading man material with his charming smile and dapper tuxedo look. Bailey’s support for trans youth and his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights have made him a beloved figure in the community.
Ncuti Gatwa, star of “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” turned heads with his incredible red carpet look, featuring a silver chestplate and black trousers. Gatwa’s bold fashion choices and charismatic presence added to the celebration of queer talent at the Oscars.
Hunter Schafer, known for her role in “Euphoria,” stunned in a full-length black dress, showcasing her unique style and elegance. Schafer’s presence at the event highlighted the importance of transgender representation in mainstream media.
Animator and director Troy Quane proudly supported trans kids by wearing a Protect Trans Kids badge at the Oscars. Quane’s advocacy for transgender rights and visibility in the industry was commendable and added an important message to the event.
Lastly, Jodie Foster proudly posed with her wife Alexandra Hedison on the red carpet, showcasing their love and support for each other. The couple looked stunning together, with Foster wearing a custom navy dress and Hedison in a one-shoulder black gown.
Overall, the 2024 Oscars were a celebration of queer talent, representation, and love. From historic wins to heartfelt moments, the night was filled with unforgettable highlights that will be remembered for years to come.
