Hannah Bardell, Lesbian SNP Candidate, Ties the Knot Amid Election Campaign
Hannah Bardell, a lesbian candidate representing the Scottish National Party (SNP), recently announced that she took a short break from her election campaign to marry her partner. Sharing the news via a social media post, Bardell exhibited a heartwarming picture of herself and her partner, Lucienne Kennedy, in wedding attires and holding bouquets.
The couple had just walked out of their wedding venue when the photograph was taken. Bardell is currently campaigning to retain her Livingston seat in the upcoming general election. Referring to her wedding day as the happiest day of her life, Bardell expressed her excitement about spending the rest of her life with Kennedy.
“To my beautiful wife, @luciennekennedy, I can’t wait to have forever with you. Thank you to our family and friends who attended our small and intimate ceremony and made it very special,” wrote Bardell.
Bardell also humorously warned her followers about an influx of wedding and election-related posts in the coming weeks. Her announcement post received an array of congratulatory messages including four red-heart emojis from former Scotland first minister Nicola Sturgeon, and well-wishing comments from Stonewall’s former chief executive, Nancy Kelley.
It was in 2015, during her campaigning for the general election, when Bardell openly disclosed her sexual orientation as a lesbian to her family. Her candidature was successful, and she won the erstwhile secure Labour seat with a majority of 16,843 votes.
As the SNP’s former spokesperson for sports and culture, Bardell has been candid about the hardships and intolerant behavior she faced due to her sexuality. These included death threats which even led her to consider if her job was worth all the trouble. In an exclusive interview with PinkNews earlier this year, she recalled the difficult moments she experienced post the demise of David Amess at his Southend West constituency surgery in 2021.
Bardell said she had considered resigning post-Amess’s tragic incident but later decided to hold onto her position. She wanted to continue being a voice for her constituents and maintained a firm belief in the importance of diverse and queer voices being represented at Westminster.
“I’m a queer woman from a working-class background and a single-parent family. There are not many individuals like me in parliament. I’m aware that I’m a disruptive force, merely by walking through the doors every day,” stated Bardell.
In July’s general election, Bardell is pitted against Alba Party candidate Debbie Ewen, Scottish Green Party representative Cameron Glasgow, Lib Dem’s Caron Lindsay, Reform UK candidate David McLennan, Workers Party of Britain’s Danielle Mclean and Labour’s Gregor Poynton.
