Former JPD officer Marcus Johnson’s recent arrest has caused shock and outrage after he reportedly used a gun and axe to murder his ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old nurse Carlos Collins. The incident occurred in Collins’s Jackson, Mississippi apartment on April 9, resulting in a high-speed car chase and Johnson’s eventual capture in Louisiana.
According to reports, Collins, a dedicated registered nurse at a local hospital, had multiple restraining orders against Johnson. On the night of the incident, Johnson followed Collins into a bar, despite the restraining orders. Despite Collins’s attempts to seek help from the security team at the bar, they were unable to intervene without the presence of the restraining order.
Collins’s mother, Ashla Hudson, expressed frustration with the bar’s security team, stating that her son might still be alive if they had taken action and arrested Johnson that night. Following the discovery of Collins’s body, police issued an arrest warrant for Johnson and successfully tracked him as he attempted to flee the state. Johnson was eventually apprehended in Louisiana and is now facing charges of murder and shooting in an occupied dwelling.
The history of Johnson, a former JPD officer, adds another layer of complexity to the case. He resigned from the department while facing disciplinary actions and was previously arrested in 2014 for impersonating a police officer. In that incident, he was charged with false pretense, grand larceny, and impersonation of an officer after using a ticket police citation book to coerce a female student into a compromising situation.
Collins’s mother fondly remembered him as a compassionate and dedicated individual who shared her profession as a nurse. She described him as a family man who loved caring for sick people and always aimed to exceed expectations. Reflecting on his aspirations in nursing, she expressed pride in his accomplishments and character.
The loss of Collins has deeply affected the community, calling attention to the importance of enforcing restraining orders and taking swift action in cases of domestic violence. While the circumstances of his death are tragic, his legacy lives on through the impact he made as a nurse and a caring person.
As legal proceedings continue against Marcus Johnson, the community grapples with the aftermath of this horrible tragedy and seeks justice for Collins. This case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and highlights the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals. May Carlos Collins rest in peace, and may his memory inspire greater awareness and action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
