Disney Channel star Ashley Tisdale recently revealed that she auditioned for the role of Karen Smith in the iconic comedy Mean Girls. Although she did not land the role, Tisdale shared that she had a lasting impact on the beloved 2004 teen comedy.
Best known for her role as Sharpay Evans in the High School Musical franchise, Tisdale’s audition for Mean Girls apparently left a mark on the film. The role of Karen Smith eventually went to Amanda Seyfried, but Tisdale’s ad-libbed line during her audition made it into the movie.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Tisdale reminisced about her audition experience. She recalled, “I just remember I ad-libbed — because I always like at an audition to steal a scene — and I ad-libbed one line and they put it in the movie. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, are you kidding me!’ I should’ve gotten a writers credit — just kidding.”
Despite not being able to remember the specific ad-libbed line, Tisdale expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of the audition process for Mean Girls. She humorously mentioned, “I was literally 16 years old. I just remember, in my brain, that that happened.”
Mean Girls, which starred Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan, has become a cult classic since its release in 2004. The film follows the story of a high school student who gets caught up in a group of popular girls known as “The Plastics.” Mean Girls explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and female empowerment in a comedic and relatable way.
In recent years, Mean Girls was adapted into a movie-musical featuring a new cast, including Renée Rapp, Angourie Rice, and Auliʻi Cravalho. While the musical received a warm reception from audiences, a joke at the expense of original star Lindsay Lohan was ultimately cut from the digital release of the film.
During one of Megan Thee Stallion’s cameos in the musical, the rapper made a reference to a derogatory term used to describe Lohan in a controversial video from 2006. The joke sparked backlash and criticism, leading to its removal from the final version of the film.
Mean Girls continues to be a beloved film for audiences of all ages, with its timeless themes and memorable characters resonating with viewers around the world. The movie is available to buy or rent on various streaming platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube.
Overall, Ashley Tisdale’s audition for Mean Girls may not have resulted in landing the role of Karen Smith, but her ad-libbed line left a lasting impression on the iconic teen comedy. As fans continue to revisit the world of Mean Girls, Tisdale’s contribution to the audition process serves as a fun and memorable part of the film’s behind-the-scenes history.
