Rob Smith, a well-known African American conservative podcaster, has recently accused Missouri State Representative Chris Lonsdale of participating in racist and homophobic heckling directed at him during a right-wing event in December. The incident occurred at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona, where a group of people taunted Smith with slurs.
According to Newsweek, Smith released previously unreleased video footage of the encounter, showing Lonsdale among the crowd shouting derogatory comments towards Smith. The video also shows Lonsdale wearing his distinctive plaid suit and red tie, matching his appearance on social media. Lonsdale can be seen pointing at Smith and joining in on the chants with the rest of the group.
Smith took to social media to call out Lonsdale and question whether the Missouri GOP supported such behavior. He expressed his disappointment and frustration with being subjected to harassment by members of his own political party. The video shared by Smith sheds light on the upsetting nature of the incident and raises concerns about the presence of prejudice and intolerance within conservative circles.
This is not the first time Smith has faced discrimination within the Republican Party. In a post last year, he recounted an encounter with white supremacists at a different event where he was subjected to racist and homophobic slurs. However, despite the challenges he has faced, Smith has remained steadfast in his beliefs and has not backed down in the face of hatred.
Turning Point USA, the organization behind the event where the incident occurred, denounced the behavior of the individuals shown in the initial video shared by Smith. They acknowledged the unacceptable nature of the treatment towards Smith and emphasized that it should never be tolerated. The organization showed support for Smith and condemned the hateful language used against him.
As a former U.S. Army veteran and contributor for publications like Queerty, Smith has been vocal about his conservative views and decision to align with the Republican Party. However, in a recent statement, Smith announced that he has chosen to leave the GOP because of the treatment he has received from extremists within the party. He declared his independence from what he called “BS” and stressed the importance of standing up against bigotry.
Smith’s decision to distance himself from the Republican Party reflects a growing trend of individuals leaving political organizations that do not address issues of discrimination and intolerance within their members. His outspoken support for inclusivity and equality has garnered support from many who believe in standing up against hate speech and bigotry in all its forms.
The incident between Rob Smith and Chris Lonsdale serves as a strong reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by marginalized communities within conservative spaces. It highlights the importance of greater accountability and action to address systemic issues of discrimination and prejudice that continue to exist in society. As discussions about diversity and inclusivity progress, it is essential for individuals like Smith to speak out against injustice and work towards creating a more fair and welcoming environment for all.
