Once upon a time, in the bustling city of Hollywood, a new film was on the horizon. It was a coming-of-age comedy, but with a twist – it was largely about teenage cancer. And leading the pack was none other than the talented Bella Ramsey, known for her role in the hit series “The Last of Us.”
Ramsey was set to star alongside Louis Partridge from “Argylle” and Ruby Stokes from “Bridgerton” in a film called “Sunny Dancer.” Directed by George Jaques, this surprise cancer-themed comedy promised to take a different approach to the often somber topic of teenage cancer.
In “Sunny Dancer,” Ramsey would play Ivy, a teenager in remission from cancer. Her parents, eager to help her move forward, insisted she attend a summer retreat for young adults affected by the disease. Reluctantly, Ivy found herself at what she dubbed “chemo camp,” where she was forced to make new friends and confront her fears head-on.
Despite her initial apprehension, Ivy soon found herself bonding with her fellow campers and discovering a newfound sense of camaraderie and love. As Variety put it, “Sunny Dancer takes a refreshing, uplifting and surprising approach to the teenage cancer story.” The film promised to showcase resilience, humor, and heart as Ivy and her friends navigated life after cancer.
Director George Jaques, who also wrote and produced the film, expressed his excitement about bringing this story to life. He shared, “I’m beyond excited to tell this story, which focuses on a subject matter very close to my heart. I can’t imagine anybody better to bring it to life than the amazing cast of Bella, Louis, and Ruby. I am truly thrilled they are a part of it.”
Hugo Grumbar of Embankment Films, which would handle global pre-sales for the film, praised Jaques for his witty and emotional approach to the story. He noted that Jaques had created funny and engaging characters in a whip-smart comedy that was sure to resonate with audiences.
For Bella Ramsey, known for their breakout roles in “The Last of Us” and “Time,” this new project marked another milestone in their blossoming career. In a recent interview with PinkNews, Ramsey reflected on how their life had changed since their breakthrough year.
Following their success in “The Last of Us,” Ramsey took on the lead role of Kelsey in season two of the BBC drama “Time.” They also lent their voice to Molly in “Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget.” In an interview with British Vogue, Ramsey, who identifies as non-binary, spoke candidly about their gender identity and the importance of using they/them pronouns.
As the world eagerly awaited the release of “Sunny Dancer,” no official date had been announced yet. But with a talented cast and a director passionate about telling a meaningful story, it was clear that this film would be one to watch.
And so, as the sun set on another day in Hollywood, the buzz around “Sunny Dancer” continued to grow. With Bella Ramsey at the helm, this comedy about teenage cancer promised to be a heartwarming and humorous tale of friendship, resilience, and love.
