Influencer Dylan Mulvaney has recently shared her aspirations of starring in a transgender remake of the iconic film Legally Blonde. Mulvaney, 27, expressed her dream role during an interview at the South by Southwest film festival, revealing her desire to portray Elle Woods, the Harvard Law School student famously played by Reese Witherspoon in the original 2001 movie.
Mulvaney’s vision for the remake includes a transgender cast, with mentions of a trans Emmett and a trans Paulette. She believes that incorporating transgender individuals into existing stories can provide a fresh perspective without requiring major changes to the original script. In fact, she feels that adding transgender characters can enhance the narrative and make it even more impactful.
The influencer also shared other goals on her “vision board” for the year 2024. These include performing with Glee star Chris Colfer, a feat she has already accomplished, and meeting Lady Gaga, which she has successfully achieved.
Legally Blonde originally gained popularity as a beloved comedy film in the early 2000s before being adapted into a successful Broadway and West End musical. The story follows Elle, a fashion merchandising major who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. Throughout her journey, she discovers a passion for law and learns valuable lessons about herself and her capabilities.
In a recent production of the musical at London’s Regent’s Park open-air theatre in 2022, trans actress Iz Hesketh made history by portraying Elle’s friend Margot, marking the first time a transgender person had taken on the role. Hesketh, known for their work on Hollyoaks, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this significant moment in musical theatre history.
Mulvaney’s desire to lead a trans remake of Legally Blonde reflects a growing trend towards more diverse and inclusive storytelling in the entertainment industry. By advocating for greater representation of transgender individuals in mainstream media, Mulvaney hopes to contribute to a more inclusive and accepting society.
As discussions around diversity and representation continue to evolve, Mulvaney’s vision for a trans remake of Legally Blonde serves as a reminder of the importance of amplifying marginalized voices and experiences on screen. With her passion for acting and commitment to promoting inclusivity, Mulvaney is poised to make a significant impact in the entertainment industry and beyond.
