Vanessa Williams says her Miranda Priestly is ‘not Meryl Streep’ in The Devil Wears Prada musical

Vanessa Williams is set to take on the iconic role of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada musical, and she wants fans to know that her version is distinctly different from Meryl Streep’s portrayal in the 2006 film.
The talented actress, known for her roles in Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives, will grace the stage at the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End starting on October 24th. With a background in Broadway, including a Tony Award-nominated performance in Into the Woods, Williams is no stranger to the stage.
Replacing the late Chita Rivera in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Williams has proven her versatility as an actress. Now, she is ready to embody the fierce and demanding character of Miranda Priestly, originally brought to life by Meryl Streep.
During a VACAYA cruise in the Caribbean, Williams shared her thoughts on portraying Miranda Priestly. She emphasized that while Streep’s interpretation was iconic, her own version would have its own unique flair. “Meryl Streep is Meryl Streep. Wilhelmina Slater is Wilhelmina Slater,” Williams stated.
On stage, Williams explained, one must project and command attention, especially in a large theatre. She expressed her intention to bring her own essence to the character of Miranda Priestly, with added musical elements to enhance the performance.
Williams also teased some exciting fashion moments in the musical, promising a spectacular recreation of the Met Gala. “We’re gonna have really good fashion… we’re recreating the Met Gala,” she shared. “It’s going to be huge. It’s going to be worth your dollar, that’s for sure.”
The Devil Wears Prada musical, running until May 31, 2025, features an original score by Elton John and a book by Kate Wetherhead of Legally Blonde: The Musical fame. Based on the bestselling novel and blockbuster film, the show follows aspiring journalist Andy as she navigates the demanding world of fashion under the mentorship of Miranda Priestly.
Williams is no stranger to playing formidable female characters, having earned an Emmy nomination for her role as Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty. With her experience and talent, audiences can expect a captivating and fresh take on Miranda Priestly in the upcoming musical.
