Donald Trump’s ongoing trial regarding the defamation of his rape victim, E. Jean Carroll, has taken a disturbing turn. According to an op-ed by Amanda Marcotte for Salon, the former president’s behavior in the courtroom has been far from what one would expect from a typical defendant. Instead, Marcotte argues that Trump is acting like a “cartoonishly evil villain on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
Marcotte highlights the fact that despite Trump’s constant complaints about having to spend time in court, he has shown up, even when not required, to intimidate not just Carroll but also the jury members. MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin, who has been attending the trial, has reported that Trump has been glaring at both jurors and Carroll, sitting directly behind her. This behavior is seen as an attempt to intimidate a woman he was found to have sexually assaulted in the 90s, as determined in a previous case.
Rubin further revealed that Trump made audible sounds while jurors responded to questions from the judge. Marcotte describes this behavior as “radiating message as much as a 77-year-old man who smells like a butt can.” She goes on to sarcastically suggest that the only way Trump could appear more like a sexual predator is if he wore a raincoat to court and periodically flashed women in view.
Marcotte argues that Trump’s behavior exemplifies the power dynamics at play in cases of sexual assault. She states that sexual assault is about power, not lust, and likens Trump’s actions to those of a predator stalking his prey. This, she says, is evidence that sexual assailants are “vicious sadists who enjoy watching their victims suffer.”
The columnist suggests that while Trump’s behavior might impress his supporters within the MAGA movement, to normal people, it is a sign of cowardice. She also notes that one would expect Trump to want the trial to be over, in order to move on from reminders of his alleged sexual assaults. However, Marcotte concludes that there is something even more important to him: continuing to torment Carroll. Trump cannot stand that she stood up to him and won, and the narcissistic injury is too great for him to let go. Hence, he continues to act like the guiltiest man alive.
The disturbing behavior exhibited by Donald Trump in the trial of E. Jean Carroll raises questions about his character and morality. While it is not uncommon for defendants to maintain their innocence in court, Trump’s actions go beyond that. His attempts to intimidate both Carroll and the jury members through menacing glares and audible sounds are deeply troubling.
This behavior not only speaks volumes about Trump’s disregard for the judicial process but also highlights the power dynamics inherent in cases of sexual assault. As Marcotte argues, it demonstrates that sexual assailants derive pleasure from their victims’ suffering and view their actions as a display of power.
The trial of E. Jean Carroll serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions. Regardless of one’s political affiliation, it is crucial that justice is served and victims are given the opportunity to seek redress. The disturbing behavior displayed by Donald Trump in this trial only further underscores the need for continued efforts to combat sexual assault and support survivors.
As the trial continues, it is essential that the legal system remains impartial and ensures a fair process for all involved. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications, not just for the individuals directly involved but also for our society’s understanding of sexual assault and the accountability of those in power.
In the pursuit of justice, it is crucial that victims of sexual assault are heard, believed, and supported. Only by confronting and addressing these issues head-on can we hope to create a society that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all its members.
