In the new short film DOXY, director Joel Michael Anderson offers viewers a glimpse into the reality of sex work. The film follows the character Johnny Ford, played by Anderson himself, as he navigates the risky world of sex work to make ends meet. Through a vlog-style format, Johnny speaks directly to the camera, sharing his experiences and shedding light on the misconceptions surrounding sex work.
Anderson’s intention with DOXY was to challenge the notion that platforms like OnlyFans are a guaranteed source of income for everyone. He wanted to highlight the harsh reality that many individuals face after entering the industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. As Anderson explains, “After starting a page and realizing they’re competing with professional performers in an oversaturated global industry, they regret exposing everything to anyone for $10.”
While Anderson does not condemn sex work, he emphasizes the importance of having realistic expectations before getting involved. He cautions that once someone enters the world of sex work, there is no turning back. The content they create and the nude photos they share online will forever be accessible to others. Anderson warns against the potential consequences of getting pulled deeper into sex work without considering an exit strategy.
One of the challenges that sex workers like Anderson face is destigmatizing their profession while educating others about the realities of their work. Anderson believes that the stigma surrounding sex work arises from misconceptions about sex workers’ morality and character. He asserts that individuals should have the freedom to explore and express their sexuality without being labeled as immoral or perverse. Sex work can be empowering for those who choose it as a means of income.
However, Anderson acknowledges that sex work can become dangerous when workers lack legal protection. In DOXY, when a client threatens to involve law enforcement, the sex worker is left vulnerable and unable to demand payment. Anderson points out that the criminalization of sex work makes it easier for exploitation and crime to occur within the industry. To address this issue, he advocates for the decriminalization of sex work, arguing that as long as the exchange is consensual and does not harm others, it should be supported as a form of free enterprise.
While efforts toward decriminalization continue, Anderson advises those considering sex work to be prepared for the challenges they may face. He warns that individuals can feel trapped in the industry without a viable alternative for income. Once someone crosses the bridge into sex work, there may be no easy way to leave without a proper exit strategy.
In DOXY, Joel Michael Anderson sheds light on the realities of sex work and encourages viewers to have realistic expectations before pursuing this line of work. By challenging misconceptions and advocating for decriminalization, Anderson aims to destigmatize sex work and provide a more accurate understanding of the industry.
