Two teenagers have been found guilty of the brutal murder of 16-year-old trans teen Brianna Ghey. The jury at Manchester Crown Court unanimously convicted the two 16-year-olds, known only as Girl X and Boy Y, after deliberating for four hours and 40 minutes.
The violent attack took place in Culceth Linear Park in Warrington, Cheshire, where Ghey was stabbed a horrifying 28 times in the back, head, and neck. The motive behind the murder remains unclear, but evidence presented during the trial suggests that the pair had extensively planned the killing for weeks beforehand.
During the trial, the court heard disturbing details of the teenagers’ dark fascination with murder, death, and torture. They would exchange violent and morbid messages with each other, and even compiled a list of other children they wished to harm. In Girl X’s bedroom, police discovered a handwritten murder note outlining their plans to kill Ghey. The prosecution also revealed Girl X’s obsession with serial killers and violent content on the internet.
Boy Y described Girl X as not being “normal,” claiming that she would make jokes about “dead babies” and identified herself as a “Satanist.” He also referred to Ghey as “it,” refusing to use her preferred pronouns, claiming it was just a joke between himself and Girl X.
Both teenagers denied the murder charges, instead blaming each other for Ghey’s death. However, the jury saw through their attempts to shift the blame and unanimously convicted them. As a result, Judge Mrs Justice Yip announced that a life sentence would be imposed on the defendants, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for the New Year. The judge will determine the minimum amount of time they must serve before being considered for release.
Following the verdict, Ghey’s family released a statement expressing their devastation and loss. Ghey’s mother, Esther Ghey, described her daughter as larger than life, funny, witty, and fearless. She spoke of the haunting realization that her daughter must have been terrified when she was alone in the park with someone she considered a friend.
Initially, Esther Ghey felt sympathy for the defendants, believing they had ruined their own lives as well as theirs. However, witnessing their lack of remorse and understanding the true nature of their actions, she expressed her relief that they would spend many years in prison away from society. Despite the pain and grief caused by her daughter’s murder, Esther Ghey pledged to continue campaigning for better mental health support for young people and their families.
Ghey’s father, Peter Spooner, also addressed the press outside the court, expressing his heartbreak over his daughter’s death. He described her as a star and highlighted the immense support she had received from her followers on TikTok.
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Ursula Doyle of CPS Mersey Cheshire spoke of the distressing nature of the case, stating that the planning, violence, and age of the killers were beyond belief. She emphasized the influence Girl X and Boy Y had on each other, turning dark fantasies into a horrifying reality. The extensive evidence of their planning and attempts to cover up the murder provided a terrifying insight into their minds.
The Crown Prosecution Service authorized murder charges for both defendants, as they were equally responsible for planning and carrying out the killing. During the trial, the defendants tried to blame each other, but the jury saw through their lies.
The CPS expressed gratitude to the family of Brianna Ghey for their courage and dignity throughout the proceedings. They hope that the guilty verdict brings some solace to the family during this difficult time.
